New York Red Bulls 3-2 Chicago Fire
The Red Bulls have finally overtaken DC United for the top spot in the Eastern Conference, thanks to a 71st minute Sacha Kljestan penalty. Things did not get off to a great start for New York. The Fire jumped out to a 2-0 lead. it began when Kennedy Igboananike was tripped on the very very edge of the penalty are in the 13th minute, leading to Jeff Larentowicz making it 1-0 from the spot. David Accam doubled the lead in the 26th minute with a wonderful solo effort and dance around Luis Robles in the Red Bull goal.
Bradley Wright-Phillips got New York on the board almost immediately. The Englishman made some space for himself and slotted home a pass from Kljestan less than two minute after Accam's goal. Mike Grella would level the score in the 38th minute with a nice chip past Sean Johnson.
The Red Bulls continued to dominate the ball for the entire second half, so it was only a matter of time before the winner came along. Michael Stephens was the perpetrator by bringing down Lloyd Sam in the box to set up Kljestan's tally.
AS stated earlier, New York finally overtakes United for the top spot in the East, and they still have a pair of games in hand over much of their competition. Chicago's nightmare season continues. They remain at the bottom of the East. However, due to the overall awfulness of the bottom half of that conference, they are still only four points back of a playoff spot.
