Crystal Palace 0-1 Sunderland
Crystal Palace could have leapt into sixth place has they been able to defeat the relegation fighting Black Cats, but Jermain Defoe has other plans. The former Toronto FC man scored in the 80th minute to send Sunderland home with three points to aid in their bake against the drop.
Palace won the match in every way except the final score. They held 67% of the ball and launched 19 shots. None of the seven on target were really quality chances. Sunderland used a defender first approach to try and keep their opponents out of the goal, acc it worked to perfection.
As was everything Sunderland did offensively, the Defoe goal came against the run of play. Defender Scott Dann failed to chase down a ball that had evaded the Palace back line. He figured Wayne Hennessey, his keeper, would play the ball on his own. He didn't and Defoe was quicker to the ball and he blew past both men with ease on his way to the winner.
Sunderland are still in the drop zone despite the win. They are in 18th and a point back of their arch rivals Newcastle for safety. Palace finds themselves in tenth place after they fail to get anything with the chance to move up four spots.
