Hooligan's Wake Up: Van Gaal still in charge at United

Louis Van Gall will live to manage another day at Manchester United thanks to a well deserved FA Cup win in the fourth round. That goes along with the retirement of a former Manchester United legend and some minor transfer action, including several MLS players leaving the league.
FA Cup- Fourth Round
Derby County 1-3 Manchester United
(Thorne 37')-(Rooney 16', Blind 65', Mata 83')

Fortunately (or otherwise, depending on your point of view), Louis Van Gaal gets a strong win in the FA Cup to save his job for the time being. A two goal win, even over a struggling Championship club like Derby County, is certainly not grounds for canning you manager. We certainly can't accept this as a reason to shut off the Van Gaal doomsday clock, either. There wasn't exactly some sort of managerial moment of genius that led to this win since a 3-1 result was sort of expected. All that means is we get to live with the Van Gaal sacking watch for a little while longer.

Bundesliga
Mainz 1-0 Borussia Monchengladbach
(Clemens 21')

Ligue 1
Olympique Marseille 1-1 Lille
(Robillard 90+5')-(Corchia 57')

European league Tables

Liga MX
Santos 2-0 Queretaro
(Rabello 23', 25')

Veracruz 2-2 Tijuana
(Penalba PK 9', Albin 28')-(Juninho 33', Martin 38')

If you exclude the opening 30 minutes, this was an impressive match for Tijuana. They went a man down in the sixth minute, then two goals down before the half hour mark. They kept their cool and fought back to level the score with room to spare before halftime. They ended up gutting out the second half and holding onto the draw despite only holding a third of possession and being a man down for 84 minutes.

Headlines
Moussa Dembele has quietly been one of Spurs best players this season, and he signed a deal to remain with the club until 2019. This is a good thing for a club that has developed a reputation for developing world class players (like Gareth Bale) and then selling them off to some world class club (like Gareth Bale). The Belgian has scored only thrice in the Premier League, but he has been their most successful passer out of the midfield this season.

After battling injuries and not making a single appearance for Inter this season, former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic is announcing his retirement. Vidic had a strong eight year career for the Red Devils. He won four Premier League titles and the Champions League once in his time spent there. He was sold to Inter in the summer of 2014 and played one strong season in Serie A before his body began to give up on him. There were whispers that he might head to DC United, but I guess he figured not playing at all was better than playing in MLS.

Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are both facing a transfer ban due to the mishandling of youth signings and it appears that they will be put on hold for the time being. The ban is being put off while FIFA looks at the appeal launched by both clubs, who claim their signings of youth talent were, in fact, on the up and up.

Liverpool and Brazilian attacking midfielder Alex Teixeira both want each other. Neither have made it a secret. Teixeira's current club, Shakhtar Donetsk, are not letting their main front man go. They have come out and said the only way Liverpool will get their hands on him is to trigger his €70 million release clause. Teixeira is pretty dang good, but not €70 million good. Since they are dead in the middle of a title race with Dynamo Kiev, Shakhtar are unwilling to part with their best player during the season, but Liverpool will certainly try again in the summer.

Good news for Arsenal on the injury front. As Tomas Rosicky and Francis Coquelin are set to return to game action this weekend, Jack Wilshere, one of the most frequently injured players in England, could only be a month and a half away. He could return from a broken leg in the middle of March.

Swansea need to keep up with Newcastle and Sunderland as the clubs stealing all the January signings. They have added Alberto Paloschi from Serie A's Chievo. He has scored eight goals in 21 appearances in Italy, and he played under new Swansea boss Francesco Guidolin at Parma.

The man who scored the cup winning goal for the Timbers is heading to Europe. Rodney Wallace has signed with Portugal's FC Arouca. While Portland will be hurt by the loss of the impactful winger, this is a move up for him. The Costa Rican international will compete for a starting job with Ivo Rodriguez.

Sporting Kansas City are on the brink of selling Krisztian Nemeth  to Al Gharafa in Qatar. Nemeth was asking for a raise and SKC simply couldn't give it to him. I suppose the $3 million haul they are getting for him had something to do with it. Al Gharafa, for the uninitiated (like I was before some research), are a mid table Qatari club that, I guess, is willing to splash the cash for borderline Hungarian internationals.
