Headlines
Steve McClaren is no longer employed at Newcastle. As many thought would happen, he was given his walking papers this morning. He was hired over the summer and his brief tenure has been nothing short of a disaster with the club on pace to be register at season's end. Rafa Benitez is reportedly lined up to take his place. Benitez was manager at Real Madrid until January when he was replaced with Zinedine Zidane. No word on how relegation would affect Benitez's hiring.

A few MLS suspensions were handed out for violent play, which was all too common on the opening day of the season. new York Red Bulls will be without Ronald Zubar for their upcoming match with Montreal thanks to a threatening tackle early in the second half against Toronto. Similarly, Vancouver's Christian Bolanos will also be suspended for one game. Both fouls were only punished with yellow cards at the time.

Minneapolis's shiny, new, billion dollar US Bank Stadium will experience International Champions Cup action before it gets to see the NFL. Chelsea and AC Milan will reportedly play a match as part of the competition in early August.

In other Minnesota soccer news, It looks like Minnesota United will officially drop the United moniker when it enters MLS next season. The league has filed copyrights for Minnesota FC as the official name of the franchise. This is thanks to Arthur Blank's unjustified strong arming into the use of the word United that has upset myself and plenty of other soccer fans.
