Things have never looked good for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The construction for the event has been littered with trouble with hot weather, bribery allegations, and abuse towards unpaid migrant workers. It's that last item making more news yesterday as Amnesty International has published a report documenting their experiences at a venue's construction site. Interviews with over 200 workers produced stories of withheld wages, poor living conditions, and recruitment fees making the World Cup nothing short of miserable for these people. All the more reason that the event should be taken away from the Middle Eastern nation.
The manager apocalypse is returning. On Tuesday we lost Remi Garde in England and yesterday saw the demise of Gary Neville at Valencia. The Englishman was supposed to turn the struggling Spanish side around, but he has won only three of his 16 in charge. He has been on the job for a shorter time than Garde was, having only been hired on December 2.
Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis is in some hot water. The Argentinian is being charged by the Football Association for betting on matches in late January. There are 12 separate offenses, but there are no hints that he bet on any match that he was involved in. Not that this matters for the charges. The FA prohibits betting on any football for any player or manager, regardless of whether or not they are involved in the matches being wagered on.
No major competitive matches.
