Yesterday we mourned the passing of Dutch legend Johan Cruyff. Cruyff was known for his skills as both a player and manager. He lost his battle with lung cancer yesterday at age 68. During his playing career for Ajax and Barcelona, he won three Ballon d'Or awards, two European Cups, and eight Eredivisie titles. He also helped the Netherlands reach the 1974 World Cup Final. He is also a reminder that American leagues have always poached aging European talent, as he had a brief stint in the United States with Los Angeles Aztecs and Washington Diplomats of the original NASL. As a manager, he was the pioneer to Barcelona's famed tiki-taka style of play and the youth development system that they have become world famous for.

Today's France-Netherlands friendly will be halted in the 14th minute in honor of Cruyff, who wore the number 14.

Adam Johnson has been sentenced to six years in the slammer thanks to his child sex charges. This brings an end to the saga that began last year when Johnson lured a 15-year-old girl into sexual acts with him. He pleaded guilty to two charges, was found guilty of another, and was let off on one other.

The Seattle Sounders have signed former American International Herculez Gomez. Gomez, who made seven appearances for Toronto last season, had been training with the team signed on with Seattle having lost all three of their matches to open the season. they are the only MLS club without a point so far.

While I had given up on David Beckham's Miami project, the English superstar sure hasn't. He has purchased a swatch of land in the city to build his stadium to house his unannounced expansion club. His plot is in the Overtown neighborhood of Miami and totals about six acres of land. He still needs approval from the city and Dade County to begin his development.

Manuel Lanzini had been at West Ham on loan from UAE based club Al Jazira, but the East London club has signed him on permanently. It is a four year deal to keep him at West Ham, where he has scored five times in 18 matches. How much the Hammers paid Al Jazira was not disclosed.
