The first day of the FIFA Council meeting in Zurich saw many discussions about an expanded World Cup. After Gianni Infantino suggested expanding the field to 48 teams recently, the organization is generally receptive to the idea of more teams participating. Whether there would be 40 or 48 nations involved was not specified, but any talk of expansion was related to growing the global popularity of the game, meaning more money for FIFA.

Infantino also unveiled the "FIFA 2.0" campaign, which aims to root out corruption and fix the planning of World Cups, which has been the source of a lot of said corruption. The primary step will be eliminating local organizing committees for each tournament and instead administering the event from their central offices in Switzerland. They are also looking to review the bidding process and how match tickets are sold. FIFA also plans to invest $4 billion in the development of soccer in all of its member nations.

Hull City have their full time replacement manager. They have gone with Mike Phelan, who has served as the interim boss since Steve Bruce unexpectedly departed the club over the summer. Phelan earned some favor with the board by leading the Tigers to wins in their first two matches of the season. Although Hull have dipped to 15th in the Premier League, they still feel he is the right man for the job.
