The MLS SuperDraft was yesterday. It is an increasingly meaningless event, but demands a little bit of attention anyway. Here are the first ten picks:
  1. Minnesota United- Abu Danladi, F, UCLA
  2. Atlanta United- Miles Robinson, D, Syracuse
  3. NYCFC (pick acquired from Chicago)- Jonathan Lewis, M, Akron
  4. Portland Timbers (pick acquired from Houston)- Jeremy Ebobisse, F, Duke
  5. Columbus Crew SC- Lalas Abubakar, D, Dayton
  6. San Jose Earthquakes- Jackson Yueill, M, UCLA
  7. Vancouver Whitecaps- Jakob Nerwinski, D, UConn
  8. Atlanta United- Julian Gressel, M, Providence
  9. Columbus Crew SC- Niko Hansen, F, New Mexico
  10. Houston Dynamo- Joe Holland, M, Hofstra
There's a very small chance that anyone beyond this top five or so becomes a noteworthy MLS player. The growth of academies and MLS's slow assimilation into the global transfer market has just about killed off the draft as an effective team building tool.

Also, a small piece of the opaque veil shrouding MLS transactions is being lifted. Specific dollar amounts for moves involving allocation money will now be revealed. No more reports of trades involving GAM and TAM without learning how much was spent.

Chelsea have dropped Diego Costa from the team for today's clash against the defending champions. He apparently got into an altercation with manager Antonio Conte and a trainer over his injury status. Costa has trained alone for three days now. To make things more complicated, the club may have received an expensive transfer offer from the Chinese Super League as well.
