The IFAB has come up with some hairbrained ideas on how to fix a sport that isn't broken. The rule changes they propose border from completely nuts, like getting rid of the 90 minute clock that has been around for 150 years, to sensible, like allowing goalkeepers to pass to a defender within the penalty area on a goal kick. Other proposals include:

  • No follow ups after a penalty kick. A goal kick would follow a failed attempt.
  • Free kicks can be taken with a moving ball.
  • Players can pass to themselves on a free kick.
  • Docking points for teams who mob the referee.
The board also calls for stricter enforcements of rules currently in place, such as the one where goalkeepers can only hold the ball for six seconds.

Alexis Sanchez sprained his ankle in a final training session leading up to Chile's Confederations Cup opener today. He is now in doubt for the game agaisnt Cameroon to open up the World Cup preamble.
