Before we get to the screaming about lvoer league soccer in the USA, there are a couple transfer stories to catch up on from across the pond. First off, Liverpool have agreed to buy Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal for the same £40 million Chelsea were offering. Ox turned down the deal from the Blues while indicating it was Liverpool, who intend to play him at central midfield, I guess, or he was staying at the Emirates. Well, Liverpool came calling and it appears he is heading away from North London again.

Everton have turned down a £25 million bid from Chelsea for Ross Barkley. The club are asking a minimum of £50 million for their prized midfielder. This doesn't mean that he won't leave the club though. He's already turned down a new contract. He may still go before the end of today, but his bum hamstring could complicate matters.

Now, for the NISA news. The new third tier league announced eight markets that will make up their debut season, which is still planned for next year (more on that in a moment). Four of them make sesne. Milwaukee, Chatanooga, Omaha, and Connecticut all lack pro soccer teams and are the exact markets the NISA should be targeting.

It's the other four I want to complain about. Let's start with the stupidest of them all, Miami. I have no idea why the NISA feels the need to throw another club into a market with the most successful and ambitious club in the NASL. Throw in the fact that David Beckham is very close to bringing MLS back to South Beach and you have a recipe for failure.

Then there is St. Louis. The Gateway City already has a successful USL franchise with dedicated fans. I witnessed the Saint Louis FC experience last week during my trip to the city. They do well for a USL team, but the city has already rejected an attempt for MLS to come to town. Now there's apparently a group looking to bring an even klower league into an town that is already taken when it comes to soccer.

Next up is Charlotte. Charlotte Independence are the local USL outfit and they don't do all that well. MLS is looking at the market, but there is little support from the powers that be. This also seems like a foolish idea.

Finally, there's Phoenix, which rivals Miami in stupidity. Phoenix Rising have a good thing going now that they have ambitious owners, and Didier Drogba. They are in the upper tier of USL popularity and have a fairly strong push for MLS to arrive. There's no more room for minor league soccer here, so why is the NISA trying?

I was optimistic about the NISA when it was first announced. They sounded like they were trying a regional approach to building a league utilizing markets that lacked pro soccer. I fiigured they would try to woo Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, and other strong NPSL markets that were on the cusp of going pro. They've done that with Chatanooga, Omaha, Connecticut, and Milwakee. These are the exact markets the new league should be attracting. Then they went and messed it up by throwing in four markets that already have higher level pro soccer. I have no idea how they expect that to work.

Peter Wilt and company claim they had 15 total letters of intent to join the NISA. Seven apparently deferred their application until at least 2019. I can only hope that these markets are the more sensible ones, but I really can't be sure. Perhaps this 2018 start date is a little too ambitious for the NISA, If some of their better market choices won't be ready for another year, why rush this thing? If year one is a failure because you picked the wrong markets to enter the league, than those other seven cities might have second thoughts about joining up.

The only thing I can point to is a desire to beat the USL to D3. This unnecessary sense of competition could very well doom the league. It would be better to take the time and get the formation of the league right than to beat you competition to a very, very weak punch.

Hooligan's Daily: Sakho, Chamberlain, Sanchez moves all fall through

Yesterday's Score
World Cup Qualifying- AFC
United Arab Emirates 1-1 Saudi Arabia
(Mabkhout 21', Khalil 60')-(Al-Abid PK 20')

No significant players actually switched teams yesterday. Instead, the highlights of the day were moves that didn't go through. First off was Liverpool rejecting a £25 million bid for Mamadou Sakho from Crystal Palace, who had him on loan all last year. Palace have been trying to get Sakho back all summer. This is the third time they've been turned down. The Reds are holding out for at least £30 million.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain turned down a move from Arsenal to Chelsea. The Gunners accepted a £40 million fee for the winger/midfielder, but the player turned down the move because he wishes to play as a central midfielder, not in a wide quasi-defensive role that Arsenal use him in and that Chelsea would, presumably, want him for.

Arsenal did some rejecting of their own, as well. Manchester City offered £50 million (and maybe Raheem Sterling) for Alexis Sanchez and were told to bugger off. Despite Sanchez's expiring contract and the rumors that he formally requested a transfer, Arsene Wenger has insisted his star forward is not for sale at any price.

Back home, the impending Las Vegas USL franchise has a name. They will be known as Las Vegas Lights FC, which does a fantastic job of bucking the boring trend of  "Place FC" that has been dominating expansion team names around the country. Over 10,000 fans voted in a poll that wound up selecting Lights FC as the new name. Owner Brett Lashbrook is now calling on fans to submit ideas for colors, logo design, and other branding elements for this new team.

Hooligan's Daily: Liverpool gnab Keita for next year

Yesterday's Scores

Transfer activity is picking up ahead of Thursday's deadline. The big move of yesterday was Liverpool announcing the signing of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig. The Guinean will arrive at the club in July of next year after he completes one final season in Germany. No exact fee was given, just the word that it is more than the £39 million they paid for Mohammed Salah earlier this summer.

There were other minor deals going down as well. Arsenal sold Kieran Gibbs to West Bromwich Albion for the low price of £5 million or so. The left back will leave pending a medical. Arsenal also appear to have agreed to a £40 million fee to sell Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Chelsea.

The other side of North London made a sale as well. Tottenham sent defender Kevin Wimmer to Stoke for £18 million. The Austrian international made all of four starts for Spurs last year after arriving from FC Koln on an undisclosed fee.

Paris Saint-Germain signed young Monaco winger Kylian Mbappe this morning on a season long loan with an agreement to buy over next summer. The deal is worth €180m plus add-ons when all is said and done and Mbappe will sign a five year deal with his new club.. It's no secret that PSG have been after the kid for a while, but Financial Fair Play rules were getting in the way. This sham of a loan gets around those as the purchase cost is essentially deferred to next year.

The USMNT roster is out for next weekend's World Cup Qualifiers against Costa Rica and Honduras. It's the usual names you'd expect for a pair of important qualifiers. Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, etc., are all there. Basically it's the A-crew back in the fold after a mostly B-side won the Gold Cup and there really aren't many surprise additions or omissions. John Brooks isn't there, but he's been dealing with injuries over the past couple weeks. Here's the full roster:

Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Atlanta United FC), Tim Howard (Colorado Rapids), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

DaMarcus Beasley (Houston Dynamo), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Omar Gonzalez (Pachuca), Matt Hedges (FC Dallas), Eric Lichaj (Nottingham Forest), Tim Ream (Fulham), Jorge Villafana (Santos Laguna), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)

Midfielders: Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas), Paul Arriola (D.C. United), Alejandro Bedoya (Philadelphia Union), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Fabian Johnson (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Dax McCarty (Chicago Fire), Darlington Nagbe (Portland Timbers), Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund), Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders FC)

Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders FC), Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders FC), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes), Bobby Wood (Hamburg)

Barcelona have bought Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund, but for less money than originally thought. Looks like they will only shell out €105 million for the winger's services. There are potential add-ons to the deal and an astronomical release clause of €400 million.

David Villa has received a surprise call up to the Spanish National Team. With Diego Costa still exiling himself from Chelsea, Spain doesn't want him for their upcoming World Cup Qualifiers. So, they've called in the leading scorer in MLS for his first international game since the 2014 World Cup.

Mexico is trying to encourage the end of their anti-LGBT chants that have earned the federation multiple fines and warnings. They are promising to donate the amount they would have been fined to Mexican schools if fans don't use the chant during their upcoming World Cup Qualifier against Panama. Fines have been as high as 20,000 Swiss Francs for recent incidents.

Hooligan's Daily: Zlatan returns to Old Trafford

Yesterday's Scores

One of the drawbacks of scheduling these posts to go up during the 9am hour in hte eastern United States (and the fact that I ussually wrap this stuff upbefore I go to bed the night before) is that news will sometimes break within minutes of these posts going live. That happened yesterday when Zlatan announced he was returning to Manchester United.

I am pretty sure Zlatan's very Zlatan tweet depitcing him in angelic clothing arm wrestling with the devil came out within minutes of yesterday's post going live. It sort of made a headline about Alexis Sanchez being available for the first time all season kind of weak.

Anyway, Zlatan will return to the Red Devils on another one year deal. Odds are good he won't see any action until January, unless the knee injury that cut his season short heals up quicker and he is fit sooner.

In other news, the UEFA Champions League draw was held yesterday and boy were the results juicy. I, for one, am looking forward to Bayern Munich and PSG battling for Group B supremacy, the potential Battle of Diego Costa in Group C, and the madhouse that will be Group H with Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Tottenham. Here's the full draw:

Group A: Benfica, Manchester United, FC Basel, CSKA Moscow
Group B: Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Anderlecht, Celtic
Group C: Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Roma, FK Qarabag
Group D: Juventus, Barcelona, Olympiakos, Sporting CP
Group E: Spartak Moscow, Sevilla, Liverpool, NK Maribor
Group F: Shakhtar Donetsk, Manchester City, Napoli, Feyenoord
Group G: AS Monaco, Porto, Besiktas, RB Leipzig
Group H: Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham, APOEL Nicosia

We also had the draw for the lesser of Europe's competitions, the Europa League. There are plenty of reasons to watch this competition. For one, it often proves less predictable than it's more lucrative sibling, and two, there are actually some strong teams out there. Arsenal is there to provide their usual hillarity. As is a very resurgent AC Milan. It may be the lesser of the continental competitions, but it certainly isn't worth ignoring. Here's the full draw:

GROUP A: Villarreal, Maccabi Tel-Aviv, Astana, Slavia Prague
GROUP B: Dynamo Kiev, Young Boys, Partizan Belgrade, Skenderbeu
GROUP C: Braga, Ludogorets Razgrad, Hoffenheim, Istanbul Basaksehir
GROUP D: AC Milan, Austria Vienna, NK Rijeka, AEK Athens
GROUP E: Lyon, Everton, Atalanta, Apollon Limassol
GROUP F: FC Copenhagen, Lokomotiv Moscow, FC Sheriff, FC Zlin
GROUP G: Viktoria Plzen, FCSB, Hapoel Beer-Sheva, FC Lugano
GROUP H: Arsenal, BATE Borisov, FC Koln, Red Star Belgrade
GROUP I: FC Salzburg, Marseille, Vitoria Guimaraes, Konyaspor
GROUP J: Athletic Bilbao, Hertha Berlin, Zorya Luhansk, Ostersunds
GROUP K: Lazio, Nice, Zulte Waregem, Vitesse Arnhem
GROUP L: Zenit St. Petersburg, Real Sociedad, Rosenborg, Vardar Skopje

I thought the Neymar drama was over, but it turns out to be just getting started. Barcelona are already suing Neymar for a breach of contract and now the Brazilian star is suing Barcelona for an unpaid loyalty bonus of €26 million. Sounds like a bunch of silliness to me.

Meanwhile, Barcelona have reportedly, at long last, agreed to buy Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund as a potential replacement to Neymar. Word on the street is they've agreed to a base fee of €120 million with up to €30 million in add-ons after several previous offers were rejected. Dortmund, for their part, has no comment on the deal.

In minor transfer news that affects USMNT supporters, Spurs have are sending American center back Cameron Carter-Vickers on loan to Sheffield United. He made four cup appearances for Tottenham last year, but never saw any league action. West Bromwich Albion also signed Scottish winger Oliver Burke from RB Leipzig for £15 million.

Arsene Wenger is saying his star forward Alexis Sanchez is fit to face Liverpool on Sunday after missing the first two games of the season with an abdominal strain. He's been heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium and, while Wenger has said he isn't for sale, him not playing hasn't quelled the transfer talk.

Meanwhile, the draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup was yesterday after the matches were all done. We have four Premier League on Premier League ties, but all of the big teams avoided each other for this year's League Cup third round. Here's the full draw:

West Bromwich Albion v. Manchester City
Everton v. Sunderland
Leicester City v. Liverpool
Manchester United v. Burton Albion
Brentford v. Norwich City
Wolverhampton Wanderers v. Bristol Rovers
Burnley v. Leeds United
Arsenal v. Doncaster Rovers
Bristol City v. Stoke City
Reading v. Swansea City
Aston Villa v. Middlesbrough
Chelsea v. Nottingham Forest
West Ham United v. Bolton Wanderers
Crystal Palace v. Huddersfield Town
Tottenham Hotspur v. Barnsley/Derby County
AFC Bournemouth v. Brighton and Hove Albion

The matches will be played the week of September 18.

Cristiano Ronaldo's five game suspension has been upheld after an unsuccessful appeal. The megastar missed the second leg of the Supercopa last night and he will miss the first four games of Real's LA Liga campaign.

Stoke City have acquired Jese from Paris Saint-Germain on a season long loan. He made 14 appearances in France last season, scoring a pair of goals. The former Real Madrid forward signed a five year deal for PSG last summer.

Wolfsburg will be without American international defender John Brooks for the next three months thanks to a thigh injury suffered in German Cup action last weekend. He played 37 minutes of their 1-0 victory over Eintracht Norderstedt on Saturday before succumbing to injury. Needless to say, Brooks will also miss the remainder of the USMNT's World Cup qualifying run.

The magical run of FC Cincinnati comes to a close at the hands of Bradley Wright-Phillips. his double put the Red Bulls through to the final, where they will face Sporting Kansas City. The sellout crowds at Nippert Stadium were a lot of fun for this tournament. They brought a whole new awareness to the U.S. Open Cup that the event desperately needed. They created a lower league Cinderella story that has helped people get into it like never before. They may not be in the final, but they have played a role in the development of American soccer. Hopefully FC Cincinnati gained a few more fans that can stick around through the rest of the USL season and beyond, whether they make it into MLS or not. And hopefully some of the people who came out to follow the U.S. Open Cup stick with it into next season.

North Carolina FC 0-1 Miami FC

North American League Tables

Colorado Rapids parted ways with head coach Pablo Mastroeni yesterday. He was halfway through his fourth season with the club. They currently sit level on points with Minnesota United for last place in the Western Conference after playing their way into the West Final last season. That season seems to be an anomaly, as the Rapids finished last in the West in his first two years. Assistant coach Steve Cook will manage the team until a permanent replacement is hired.

The United 2026 World Cup bid released their list of 49 candidate stadiums to host games in the 2026 World Cup, should they win hosting rights. Plenty of familiar places are on the list. New York, three stadiums in LA, Chicago, and all the largest cities in the USA. Mexico sent three possible stadiums to the race, including Estadio Azteca and Estadio Chivas. Canada, meanwhile is offering Rogers Centre, BMO Field, Stade Saputo, Stade Olympique, BC Place, and three more candidates to the fold.

Gareth Barry is moving from Everton to West Brom. The 36-year-old midfielder signed with Tony Pulis's club for an undisclosed fee. It's the fourth Premier League team he's played for in 21 seasons. He's also five appearances short of Ryan Giggs's all time record of 632 Premier League appearances.

Everton also made strides towards signing a player. They finally agreed to a £45ish million fee for Gylfi Sigurdsson. The Icelandic international will be at Everton today to take a medical and finalize the deal.

Hooligan's Daily: Ronaldo suspended five games for shoving a ref

Yesterday's Scores
DFB Pokal- First Round
BFC Dynamo Berlin 0-2 Schalke 04
(Konoplyanka 78', 90+1')

MSV Duisburg 1-2 Nürnberg
(Wolze PK 90+4')-(Behrens 21', Margreitter 41')

SC Paderborn 07 2-1 St. Pauli
(Wassey 41', Antwi-Adjej 79')-(Allagui 90+1')

Hansa Rostock 0-1 Hertha Berlin
(Weiser 85', Ibisevic 90')

Fan insanity caused a nice little fifteen minute delay in this match. It all began when Hansa fans pulled out a banner that had been stolen from Hertha supporters, which erupted into flares and fireworks being fired between the two sets of hooligans.

Cristiano Ronaldo will sit out Real Madrid's next five games for the referee shoving incident during Sunday night's Supercopa first leg. Ronaldo was sent off for a second yellow after a dive in the penalty area and took out his frustration by pushing the ref in the back. He gets one game for the red card and four for the abuse of a match official. Real will appeal the suspension, no doubt.

The rift between Philippe Coutinho and Liverpool continues to grow. He did not make the trip to Hoffenheim for the Reds Champions League playoff match this evening as he continues to desire a move to Barcelona. Jurgen Klopp also commented that Coutinho "cannot play for Liverpool" with this standoff going on. The club most recently rejected a £90 million bid from the Spanish giants, who continue their search for Neymar's replacement.

The Premier League is aiming to crack down on this transfer drama leaking into the regular season. There is a proposal to move the transfer deadline to before the start of the season for next year. Representatives from the 20 Premier League clubs will vote on the issue at next month's shareholder meeting.

American international John Brooks injured himself playing for his new club, Wolfsburg, in their DFB Pokal match over the weekend. The thigh problem will likely keep him out of their Bundesliga opener this weekend.

Kaka was sent off for grabbing Aurelien Colin by the mouth as a joke late in Orlando City's loss to New York Red Bulls on Saturday, which prompted the club to release a statement on the matter. They have decided to respect the referee's decision to issue a red after consulting the VAR in order to " to avoid further unjustified consequences that may come from appealing the decision made on the field." Although the respect the decision, they do not support that he is guilty of violent conduct, due to the playful circumstances of the incident. This feels a little contradictory. If you don't think violent conduct was involved, why not appeal? What sort of unjustified consequences could arise from an appeal? Isn't it just either the suspension stays on or gets removed? Kaka is already out for one game, why would the league make it worse?

The best part of this glorified friendly was how Ronaldo got himself sent off late on. He removed his shirt celebrating his goal in the 80th minute to earn the first yellow card. He followed that up by blatantly diving in the penalty area a few minutes later to earn his second. He will miss the second leg of the Supercopa on Wednesday, and may face additional discipline for shoving the referee after the red card came out.

Paulinho is reversing the trend of players bolting for China. The Brazilian international is leaving Chinese champions Ghangzhou Evergrande for more lucrative pastures in Barcelona. Real Madrid have extended Zinedine Zidane's deal with the club for another three years. This makes total sense since all Real Madrid have done since bringing him on is win games. In a year and a half in charge, Zidane has won the Champions League twice and La Liga once. So, of course he deserves a longer stay.
