Headlines
I thought American soccer had reached the pinnacle of poorly named clubs when the NASL's Orange County expansion side named themselves California United, as if a little NASL club could unify a state the covers half the Pacific coast and has another six other professional clubs within its boundaries.

I was mistaken, however, because the NASL's San Diego expansion has blown them away with the amount of "uh, what?" in their name. They will be called 1904 FC, not because the club was founded in 1904, like the case is with many German clubs with 04 at the end of their name. Nor was the city of San Diego founded in 1904, as is the case with the USL's Reno 1868.

No, they called it 1904 because the letter 'S' is the 19th letter in the alphabet and the letter 'D' is the fourth. Then the club had the audacity to say the number has a great deal of significance in the city. But, hey, at least a San Diego native came up with the name,

Listen, I'm all for trying to be original with the name of your club. You don't have to call the team the San Diego Whatevers to conform with American sports team naming style. You also don't have to call it San Diego FC, because that's unoriginal and boring. But there are plenty of better names than forcing some number into a manufactured history and connection with the place you call home.

Just spit balling off the top of my head here, but why not Mission San Diego? There's an actual connection there, as the city was founded as a missionary city by the Spanish. It's not too American, has a connection to the city's history, and doesn't require some corporate speak press release to explain its significance.

Reports indicate that Landon Donovan could challenge Sunil Gulati for his seat as president of U.S. Soccer. He didn't comment when asked about the possibility, but it is being reported that he's seriously considering giving it a go. Regardless of Donovan's status, this will be the first contested election since 1998. Boston based lawyer Steve Gans, who announced his desire to run a few months ago, received the required three letters of recommendation to formally declare his candidacy. All nomination's are due on December 12.
