Hooligan's Daily: Heartbreak for USMNT as they miss World Cup for the first time since 1986

Yesterday's Scores
World Cup Qualifying- CONCACAF
Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 United States
(Gonzalez OG 17', A. Jones 37')-(Pulisic 47')

Honduras 3-2 Mexico
(Elis 34', Ochoa OG 54', Quioto 60')-(Peralta 17', Vela 39')

Panama 2-1 Costa Rica
(G Torres 53', R. Torres 88')-(Venegas 36')

This was the exact combination of disastrous occurrences that needed to happen to knock the USMNT out of the World Cup. The Americans got off to a horrible start. They conceded a flukey own goal early in the match. Then an absolute golazo by Alvin Jones put them down 2-0. Some signs of life came through Christian Pulisic early in the second half, but, in the end, the USA's hopes of making the World Cup were more bogged down than that pitch on a tiny Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela.

Meanwhile, Panama ended up winning on a goal that never went in the net and Honduras stormed back from behind against Mexico, twice, to make the ultimate doomsday scenario a reality.

Plenty will be said and written about why the USMNT failed to qualify for their first World Cup since 1986. Most of the takes will be right in their own unique way. This failure was a combination of poor coaching, poor player development, subpar player talent, poor team selection, and a federation that doesn't quite do things the way the rest of the world does. Many think this gut punch will be the catalyst that sets off some much needed reforms to the way our country approaches the game. Many of those same people cheered as the team lost this match and bumbled their way out of the World Cup. I hope the changes come, but I also hope that missing out on the World Cup doesn't harm the growth of this sport in ways that set us back a good 15 years or more.
