Eric Wynalda has thrown his hat in the ring for the upcoming U.S. Soccer presidential election. H and Steve Gans were given the chance to present their platforms and qualifications in front of National Council of the U.S. Adult Soccer Association yesterday.

Wynalda is running on a platform that supports promotion/relegation and flipping the American calendar to align with the FIFA standard August to May season, as well as equal pay for the U.S. Women's National Team. All are great idea that would benefit the game as a whole, but pro/rel and the calendar flip would be difficult to implement.

I've had my say about how great it would be to have pro/rel around, but how the system just isn't ready for it yet. As for the calendar, I like the idea of aligning the season with Europe for a number of reasons. The two biggest are the international breaks coming at less awkward times and having the nitty gritty of the MLS season and the playoffs wouldn't be competing against the NFL and college football,. However, this will be a logistical nightmare to execute. Do you have an eight month MLS off season that extends from MLS Cup in December until the start of a new season in August? I don't know if I want eight months without domestic soccer, even if it's only a one time thing.I'd really like to see his plan on how he will actually get that one done.

Gans spent more time discussing his credentials for the job and didn't really offer much in terms of solutions to problems. He did bring up the surplus of funds in youth soccer programs and the desire to use that money to help underprivileged kids get into the game, which is great, but only addresses one of the many issues plaguing American soccer.
