Sporting Kansas City defender Ike Opara was named the league's Defender of the Year. Opara helped anchor the stingiest defense in MLS as they only allowed 29 goals on the season. He set a career high in games and minutes played. He also managed three goals, second in MLS among defenders. It's his first time winning the award.

New England Revolution announced the hiring of Brad Friedel as their next head coach. Friedel replaces Jay Heaps, who was fired in September. It's his first senior head coaching job. He's spend the last two years coaching the U.S. U-19 National Team and assisting Tab Ramos with the U-20s.
