As if Real Madrid needed more problems, they learned they will be without striker Karim Benzema for un unknown timeframe thanks to a hamstring injury. He will continue to be assessed throughout his recovery, but the club wouldn't say how long he will be out. Media estimates have him missing two or three weeks, though. Real Madrid are in fourth place in La Liga, 14 points behind Barcelona, who just thrashed them 3-0 at the Bernabeu before Christmas.

Headlines
After fawning over each other all summer long, Liverpool and Virgil Van Dijk are finally getting together. They announced a club record fee of £75 million is being sent to Southampton in exchange for the defender, the most ever paid for a back line player. He will officially join the club in the new year when the transfer window opens.

Head of the Russia 2018 organizing committee Vitaly Mutko stepped down from his post shortly after taking a temporary leave of absence from his post as head of the Russian Football Union. He was heavily linked with the state sponsored doping program that resulted in the country being banned from the Olympics. He himself has been banned as well. Alexei Sorokin will take his place as the final preparations for this summer's World Cup roll on.

Swansea City have their latest manager. They hired Carlos Carvalhal to replace the recently fired Paul Clement. Carvalhal comes over from Sheffield Wednesday, who canned him on Christmas Eve with the team in 15th place in the Championship. Before coming to England's second tier in 2015, he had stops at Besiktas, Sporting Lisbon, and Maritimo and was an assistant at Bayern Munich. He's their fifth manager in the last two years.

Orlando City SC acquired midfielder Jose Villarreal from LA Galaxy fir a third round pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft. They also signed Libyan fullback Mohamed El-Munir from Partizan Belgrade in Serbia. Villarreal has been a part time player with the Galaxy since 2012. He has five goals and nine assists in 68 appearances in his career. El-Munir has seven appearances for the defending Serbian champions this year and was once part of Dinamo Minsk when they won the Belarusian Premier League in 2015.

Sevilla fired manager Eduardo Berizzo yesterday, less than six months on the job and mere weeks after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The club are outside La Liga's top four under his reign and got crushed 5-0 when they played Real Madrid earlier this month. They are going to appoint a new coach, but not until after the holidays.

Sacha Kljestan saw another game added to his suspension for the tunnel fight during the second leg of the Eastern Conference semi-finals in Toronto. The extra game stems from an altercation with stadium security during the fight. Jozy Altidore was fined an undisclosed amount in addition to the one game suspension he already served.

Headlines
MLS announced they will wait until early 2018 to select the second expansion franchise in this round of expansion. The league praised all three remaining bids in their statement, while adding that the expansion committee needs more time to determine which of the three would be the best fit for league at this time. Sacramento and Cincinnati are largely considered to be the favorites with Detroit as a distant fourth.

In a related story, Sacramento Republic are looking to add another wealthy investor amongst the speculation that MLS feels their ownership group isn't strong enough. Republic CEO Kevin Nagle released his three step plan to further strengthening the financial side of their bid yesterday. He's looking to attract another lead investor, as well as another limited partner, while engaging the community more than they already have. I still think Sacramento has what it takes to be in MLS right now and that they deserve the nod over Cincinnati. Then again, I felt Cincinnati deserved it more than Nashville, so what do I know?

Headlines
U.S. Soccer officially announced the eight candidates who will run in their upcoming presidential election. Paul Caligiuri, Kathy Carter, Carlos Cordeiro, Steve Gans, Kyle Martino, Hope Solo, Michael Winograd, and Eric Wynalda all passed a background check and got the three references needed to get on the ballot. Paul LaPointe, the conference manager for the UPSL's Northeast Conference, failed to get himself on the ballot in the end.

Big shocker here, commissioner Don Garber and his posse were in Nashville to officially welcome the city into MLS. He was up on stage with the city's mayor, Megan Barry, John Ingram, the principal investor in the new expansion franchise, and other members of the group who helped their bid win out. Deep pocketed owners and a solid stadium plan got them there, which really has me thinking Detroit shot themselves down by abandoning the jail site stadium idea. They have the deepest of deep pocketed investors backing their bid and, of they had moved forward on the jail site, I think they'd be a slam dunk over Sacramento (who has questions about ownership) and Cincinnati (who has questions about their stadium).

Regardless, the Nashville team will join MLS as their 24th team, which implies they will start ahead of Miami, possibly in 2019. They will eventually play in a 27,500 seat stadium on the Nashville fairgrounds. In the mean time, Nashville SC begins USL play next year and may become the MLS franchise, but that wasn't made clear.

No word was given on the rest of the process for them, nor was their any update on the remaining three finalists.

Swansea fired manager Paul Clement yesterday. He took over for the short lived Bob Bradley less than a year ago and, while he saved the club from relegation last season, he has them sitting in last place right now. Swansea will be on their fourth manager in the last two seasons when they get around to hiring a replacement.

Headlines
MLS is heading to Nashville. The league teased a major announcement in the city for today, which can only mean they've picked the Music City as one of the two expansion markets for this next round. They have the stadium, they have the rich ownership group, they lack the existing pro team, but I don't think MLS cares all that much. Cincinnati and Sacramento appear to be dueling for the second of two spots, and we should learn which one gets it by the end of the week.

LA Galaxy acquired Venezuelan international Rolf Feltscher on a free transfer yesterday. The 27-year-old outside back has played professionally in Italy, Germany, Spain, and England, most recently with Cardiff City in the Championship. He's made over 200 appearances overall during his well travelled career.

Former Paris Saint-Germain manager Laurent Blanc reportedly turned down any advances by U.S. Soccer to be the next coach of the USMNT. The Frenchman has been out of work since being sacked by PSG in the spring of 2016 for his failure to get out of the Champions League quarterfinals. Sunil Gulati, for his part, denies reaching out to him.

The Portland Timbers officially named Giovanni Savarese as their new head coach, replacing Caleb Porter. Savarese has spent the last five years as head coach of the New York Cosmos. He won the NASL three times in that span and took them to four Soccer Bowls overall, losing the last one to San Francisco Deltas in October. It's his first MLS coaching gig, but he played five years in the league and was the head of youth development for the New York Red Bulls for a couple years before taking the Cosmos job.

The draw for the round of 16 of the CONCACAF Champions League was held last night. We get one MLS on MLS matsch as Toronto FC will take on Colorado Rapids in the first round. There are no matches between MLS sides and Liga MX sides this round. Here's the full draw:

There were a handful of MLS transactions yesterday, headlined by the David Bingham to LA thing becoming official. The Galaxy acquired his MLS rights in exchange for up to $250,000 worth of MLS funny money. Also out there from yesterday:
  • FC Dallas acquired goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer from the New York Cosmos. He started 25 games for them last year on their way to their defeat in the NASL Soccer Bowl.
  • Orlando City snagged RJ Allen and Stefano Pinho. Allen comes from New York City FC with a draft pick back to Yankee Stadium. Pinho comes from Miami FC, who won both the spring and fall seasons of the NASL behind his league leading 17 goals. They also resigned Dillon Powers.
  • The New York Red Bulls signed Stefano Bonomo from their USL affiliate. The 2015 SuperDraft pick is the fifth player to be promoted from RBII to the first team.
  • Real Salt Lake signed U.S. U-20 international Brooks Lennon on a permanent deal. The Liverpool product spent 2017 on loan in Utah, where he scored three goals and provided four assists.

Headlines
Glasgow Celtic of the Scottish Premier League ended a historical run yesterday. They lost a domestic match for the first time in 69 games when Hearts of Midlothian beat them 4-0. It was the first time they lost to a fellow Scottish team since May of 2016. Their 69 match run is a British record, beating the previous mark of 62 games unbeaten, which had also been set by Celtic a century ago. The club ran away with the Scottish title last season, but they are only two points ahead of Aberdeen with a game in hand at the moment.

Brazilian legend Kaka is hanging up his boots. The star most known for his exploits with the Brazil national team and AC Milan already announced he was leaving Orlando City back in the fall, but now he's confirmed his desire to end his playing career completely. He's won just about everything there is to win. In fact, he's one of only eight players to win the World Cup, UEFA Champions League, and Ballon d'Or in his career. He wouldn't say what's next for his life, but he's been linked with a director's role at AC Milan before.

Yesterday MLS held its first stage of the Reentry Draft, where players who were out of contract or had options not picked up by their former clubs, but not yet eligible for free agency, could be chosen by new squads. Only two players were picked. Tyrone Mears was selected by Minnesota United and Mike Grella was taken by the Colorado Rapids. Grella was subsequently sent to Columbus for a 2019 MLS SuperDraft pick. In this stage, teams had to pick up the entire contract of a player. In tomorrow's second round, teams can negotiate new deals with their selections.

There were also a handful of other MLS deals from yesterday:

  • Sporting Kansas City signed French midfielder Yohan Croizet to a DP contract. He arrives from Belgian club KV Mechelen and will be with SKC until 2020 with an option for 2021.
  • Drew Moor resigned with Toronto FC for one year with an option for 2019.
  • Houston Dynamo signed goalkeeper Chris Seitz off the free agent market. He spent the last seven years with FC Dallas, where he started 96 games with 18 clean sheets.
  • LA Galaxy are set to acquire David Bingham from San Jose for around $200,000 in MLS funny money. Bingham would represent LA's clearest number one keeper since Jaime Pineda left town a couple years ago.

Hooligan's Daily: Pulisic named Male Player of the Year by U.S. Soccer

Yesterday's Score
Coppa Italia- Round of 16
Lazio 4-1 Cittadella
(Immobile 11', 87', Anderson 24', Camigliano OG 36')-(Bartolomei 41')

Headlines
Unsurprisingly, Christian Pulisic was named U.S. Soccer's Male Player of the Year. The Borussia Dortmund standout was far and away the best player for the USMNT this year. He either scored or assisted on 13 of the 17 goals scored in matches he played with the national team. He also turned himself into a key piece of the Borussia Dortmund attack at the club level. He is the youngest player to ever win the award. At age 19 he's two years younger than when Landon Donovan won it for the first time.

Los Angeles FC signed Uruguayan teenager Diego Rossi to a Young Designated Player contract. He will arrive from 51-time Uruguayan champions Penarol on New Years Day. In his two seasons playing in his homeland, the 19-year-old forward scored 13 times in 47 appearances. He's also represented his country at the U-17 and U-20 levels, scoring ten times in 39 matches. He's the second youngest DP in MLS history, behind only FC Dallas's Fabian Castillo.

MLS's board of governors was supposed to vote on the next round of expansion yesterday, but no announcement came out of their meeting. The one important piece of news that did emerge was the word that the BOG approved the alterations to David Beckham's Miami expansion efforts. This doesn't officially grant them a team, but that should come in the next few months.

U.S international midfielder Joe Corona is heading to Club America on loan. The 27-year-old has spent the majority of his career with Club Tijuana, but he only made 11 appearances last year. He also rejoins former Xolos boss Miguel Herrera, who now coaches at America.

Headlines
Eight candidates turned in the requisite three nominations to run for U.S. Soccer's upcoming presidential election, that's one down from the nine who announced they'd run. The federation didn't release the list, since they're all pending background checks, but the nine who applied were former men's national team players Paul Caligiuri, Eric Wynalda and Kyle Martino; U.S. women's goalkeeper Hope Solo; Soccer United Marketing president Kathy Carter; USSF vice president Carlos Cordeiro; Boston lawyer Steve Gans; New York lawyer Michael Winograd; and Paul LaPointe, Northeast Conference manager of the United Premier Soccer League. My guess is Solo was the one who didn't make the cut, since she was the most recent announcement and probably the one that made the least sense considering her troubled legal history and lack of any real credentials.

The federation did announce it would create a general manager position for both the men's and women's national teams, but it didn't exactly clarify what the person would do. Perhaps they would help with team selections, or act as a technical director who develops players, but who really knows.

As was rumored earlier this week, Atlanta United completed their trade for Timbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe. The Five Stripes are sending up to $1.65 million in MLS funny money and an international roaster spot to Portland in return. The second overall pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft had scored 27 goals a d 30 assists in a club record 214 matches. Putting him on an attack with the likes of Miguel Almiron, Josef Martinez, and more will certainly do wonders for his production.

There were also a handful off less significant moves in MLS yesterday. The biggest of which was the Houston Dynamo permanently signing Alberth Elis, who excelled with the club in 2017 while on loan from Monterrey. Here are the rest:

Headlines
MLA held its Expansion Draft for Los Angeles FC yesterday. The selections were a little less obscure than the players taken by Atlanta United and Minnesota United a year ago, but they were still taken as tradeable assets as opposed to building blocks for a franchise. They selected the following:

  1. Tyler Miller, GK, Seattle Sounders
  2. Latif Blessing, F, Sporting Kansas City
  3. Marco Urena, F, San Jose Earthquakes
  4. Jukka Raitala, D, Columbus Crew
  5. Raheem Edwards, D/M, Toronto FC
Owing to the face that these guys are fully tradeable, Edwards and Raitala were almost immediately flipped to Montreal for defender Laurent Ciman. After the move, LAFC's roster stands at ten players and is very attack heavy at the moment:

Goalkeepers (1): Tyler Miller
Defenders (3): Laurent Ciman (INT'L), Omar Gaber (INT'L), Walker Zimmerman
Midfielders (1): Carlos Alvarez
Forwards (5): Latif Blessing, Bassey Etim (INT'L), Rodrigo Pacheco (INT'L), Marco Urena (INT'L), Carlos Vela (DP, INT'L)

The Portland Timbers are reportedly close to hiring Giovanni Savarese to replace Caleb Porter. Savarese had been coaching the NEw York Cosmos of the NASL, where he won three titles. He spent five seasons playing in MLS with three clubs, so he knows a little bit about the league and coaching in the United States. An official announcement is expected shortly.

There's been another alteration to Miami's efforts to join MLS. David Beckham's ownership group is being restructured a few days before they are set to meet with the league's board of governors. Majority partner Todd Boehly is dropping out and being replaced by Jorge and Jose Mas, both prominent Miami executive with local corporation MasTec. Boehly was the co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, so that is a significant loss in terms of financial clout, but the Mas brothers should make up for it.

Hooligan's Daily: Portland shopping Nagbe with Atlanta interestes

Serie A
Lazio 1-3 Torino
(Alberto 69')-(Berenguer 54', Rincon 64', Edera 73')

Lazio players were crying foul at the end of this game, saying there's a conspiracy against them after several supposedly poor refereeing decisions went against them. Their main gripe comes from a missed handball in the penalty area at the end of the first half. Lazio players and coaches cried for handball just before half time and the ref didn't even go to review to attempt to verify their claims. I haven't been able to find video, but Twitter reactions indicate they have a case. Regardless, moments later, Ciro Immobile was sent off for violent conduct after the ref did go to video review to spot his headbutt during stoppage time. Needless to say, Torino went on to score thrice in the second half to sink the hosts without much trouble.

Headlines
The Portland Timbers are reportedly shopping midfielder Darlington Nagbe after he asked for a hefty raise in salary this winter. The USMNT player asked for his $565,000 salary to be nearly doubled to $1 million, and Portland apparently isn't prepared to handle such a steep increase in wages. They already use TAM to buy his salary down below the designated player threshold. Atlanta United is reportedly very interested in Nagbe, who has spent his entire pro career with the Timbers. He's been courted by European clubs before, as he visited Celtic last winter before choosing to return to Portland.

Headlines
Things look pretty bleak for Borussia Dortmund. After a hot start through the month of September, the club are winless in their last eight league matches. Their last win came on September 30, when they were five points clear of first place. Now, they find themselves 13 points behind leaders Bayern Munich after two plus months of misery.

As a result, Borussia Dortmund have sacked manager Peter Bosz after five months on the job and brought in Peter Stoger to replace him. It's Dortmund's first midseason coaching change in 11 years. Stoger was fired by FC Koln last week, so he's got some winning issues of his own right now, but the club say they are hiring him for his full body of work, not his recent failings. He's signed through the end of this season.

The UEFA Champions League held its round of 16 draw early this morning and we're blessed with a couple great games. The highlight is PSG playing Real Madrid, but there's also Chelsea-Barcelona and Juve-Tottenham. Here's the full draw:

We also had the Europa League round of 32 draw. Arsenal will take on Ostersunds FK, while two bigger clubs in Napoli and RB Leipzig will square off. Here are all the ties to be played February 15 and 22:

MLS Cup Final
Toronto FC 2-0 Seattle Sounders
(Altidore 67', Vazquez 90+4')

I've spent my entire day away from home. First, travelling to Toronto, then sitting in the chilly auxiliary press tribune at BMO Field, then crossing off a bucket list item by experiencing the TFC locker room after they won MLS Cup, avenging last year's defeat to these same Seattle Sounders.

It was a much more thrilling final than last year's affair. Greg Vanney came out with some adventurous tactics that totally caught Seattle off guard. Toronto pummeled Stefan Frei with 22 shots, forcing him to make nine saves. Frei was amazing, but there was no way the Sounders were going to be able to hold on with how aggressive the TFC attack was.

Rather than say it all again right here, I'll just link to my three SBI pieces on the match. The first was simply declaring Michael Bradley the man of the match, despite his USMNT counterpart Jozy Altidore winning the MVP. The second is about Toronto's MLS Cup obsession that began the moment Roman Torres scored the winning penalty for the Sounders. Finally, an article on Bradley, who led the way with focus and determination.

Don Garber gave his annual State of MLS address yesterday and there were a few interesting tidbits to come out of it:

  • Garber mentioned the possibility of new expansion markets leapfrogging Miami in the expansion pecking order. This has me thinking the league selecting three of the four finalists when the make their expansion selections next week is not out of the question.
  • He said it was still possible to keep the Crew in Columbus, despite Anthony Precourt's clear desire to bold the capital of Ohio, the recent stadium ideas out of Austin, and him stating Columbus isn't economically viable. I'm inclined to think he's just trying to satisfy the masses and that he doesn't really mean it.
  • MLS teams will get more MLS funny money to spend over the next two years. Teams will receive $1.2 million in TAM in both 2018 and 2019 plus an additional $2.8 million per year. Teams can hold onto that additional cash and save it for future use if they so desire.
  • Garber talked about the calls for modifications to the playoffs by saying “If you could wave a magic wand, ending the season before the FIFA break in November and not have that gap then we wouldn’t have that gap you mentioned. I think it’s important to note that we’ve had higher average attendance and higher television ratings for these playoffs than any other year in our history.”

Headlines
Legendary USWNT goalkeeper Hope Solo has added her name to the overgrown list of U.S. Soccer presidential candidates. She announced her desire to succeed Sunil Gulati in a Facebook post last night. She calls for reform of the pay to play structure that dominates youth soccer, equal treatment of the men's and women's national teams, creating a winning culture within USSF from the youth levels up, and complete financial and operational transparency within the federation.

The field of candidates now presumably contains every American citizen, but it most notably has Solo, SUM president Kathy Carter, former U.S Men’s National Team players Kyle Martino, Paul Caligiuri, and Eric Wynalda, USSF vice president Carlos Cordeiro, Boston based attorney Steve Gans, Massachusetts regional director of the United Premier Soccer League Paul Lapointe, and former player and A-League general manager Michael Winograd on the list.

In other U.S Soccer news, the USMNT will face France in a friendly on June 9 in Lyon as part of the French World Cup warm-up. It will be France's third of three summer friendlies to prepare them for Russia. It's the first summer friendly announced for the Americans so far.
