Headlines
Don Garber gave his annual State of MLS address yesterday and there were a few interesting tidbits to come out of it:

  • Garber mentioned the possibility of new expansion markets leapfrogging Miami in the expansion pecking order. This has me thinking the league selecting three of the four finalists when the make their expansion selections next week is not out of the question.
  • He said it was still possible to keep the Crew in Columbus, despite Anthony Precourt's clear desire to bold the capital of Ohio, the recent stadium ideas out of Austin, and him stating Columbus isn't economically viable. I'm inclined to think he's just trying to satisfy the masses and that he doesn't really mean it.
  • MLS teams will get more MLS funny money to spend over the next two years. Teams will receive $1.2 million in TAM in both 2018 and 2019 plus an additional $2.8 million per year. Teams can hold onto that additional cash and save it for future use if they so desire.
  • Garber talked about the calls for modifications to the playoffs by saying “If you could wave a magic wand, ending the season before the FIFA break in November and not have that gap then we wouldn’t have that gap you mentioned. I think it’s important to note that we’ve had higher average attendance and higher television ratings for these playoffs than any other year in our history.”
